A Randy's production the song was credited to Lord Creator and S. Sparrow (Slinger Francisco or Mighty Sparrow) Lord Creator a. k. a. Kentrick Patrick is backed by the Joe Williams Orchestra. This was the official independence song to mark the occasion when Jamaica gained full independence from the commonwealth on the 6th August 1962. The withdrawal was the result of a referendum that was given to the people in 1961, the Jamaican people had only gained universal adult suffrage fifteen years earlier.

The British issue with the added word Calypso in the title possibly a diagnostic, as a way of appealing to a wider audience many of whom would be, by and large, ignorant of any musical style from the West Indies other than Calypso. This also marked the launch of the independant Island label; starting as it was to carry on: with a long history of careless credits and spelling.
