SPIT IN THE SKY (YOUR NEST) * DELROY WILSON * BLACK SWAN 405 * UK

One of a brace of infamous 'grudge' records, this one, alleged to have been composed by Clement Dodd himself, is aimed at the head of Prince Buster. Sung by Coxsone Dodd's fourteen year old prodigy Delroy Wilson (who's voice hadn't yet broken) it is a reply to Prince Buster's King, Duke & The Sir. Released on Coxsone's premier label N. D. Records in Jamaica this was Delroy Wilson's second ever recording, a follow up to his debut If I Had a Beautiful Baby. Spit in the sky and it will fall in your eye, is an old cautionary proverb that, in Jamaica during the early part of the twentieth century, would have run: "If you 'pit a de sky it wi' fall a you face" the natural corollary to which was: "One 'pit dun better dan one up". Roger Dalke in JS20 gives the full title of this cut Spit In The Sky (Your Nest) I guess this is how it reads on the Original N. D. issue, so, although I have no real idea what it refers to I have included it here.
