I DON'T KNOW * WILLIE MABON AND HIS COMBO * CHESS 1531 * USA

Pianist and singer Willie Mabon was born in Hollywood in 1925 and died sixty years later in Paris, France where he had been living and working since 1972. He first recorded for Apollo as, err, Big Willie, in 1949 - the self penned I Don't Know was originally recorded for the Parrot label of Chicago released on #1050 (it was also released for a brief time on Checker {78 rpm only} with the same number as the Parrot issue) It was an instant success and quickly picked up by the Chess brothers who released it on their premier imprint and from there it went to the number one slot on the R&B charts staying  at the top for eight weeks. As a testament to its success an 'answer' record was released by Linda Hayes, which, in its turn was also a success.

I Don't Know was issued on both the 78 RPM and 45 RPM format with the Chess imprint, the release below is a 1970s copy with out the 'and His Combo' credit.
